4-minute Video on WellAI’s Mathematical Models of Language

We wanted to share this brief 4-minute video, in which Daniel Satchkov, machine learning lead at WellAI, explains:

 

• how to use neural nets, neurons and transformers to translate and aggregate textual data,
• how one must be aware of adversarial problems (panda is not gibbon),
• how an ensemble of smaller models could be better than one very sophisticated model.

This last point is very important. 

The big secret big data companies don’t want you to know about is that many of the newest and more sophisticated NLP models may not be that much better than a cleverly constructed ensemble of more traditional NLP models:

 

• The latest models (BERT, GPT-3) may marginally gain in accuracy, but require hundreds of times more computing power – which becomes very-very expensive, despite Moore’s Law.
• More sophisticated models could be tricked much easier with adversarial problems – e.g. could be tricked that panda is a gibbon.
