60-Second Video on WellAI’s New Dermatology App

We would like to share this brief 60-second video in which Daniel Satchkov, machine learning lead at WellAI, talks about WellAI’s new dermatology tool.

In the past 5 years, there have been tremendous developments in the field of artificial intelligence called computer vision.

Due to quickly growing pixel resolution on smartphones and photo cameras, computer vision in dermatology has become at par or better than even experienced dermatologists, in identifying melanomas.

For the machine learning model training, WellAI data scientists used 39,000 real-life diverse skin images compiled from various sources and different countries.  Unlike most commercial computer vision models, special attention has been given and a tremendous amount of work has been spent on minimizing the so-called Type II error (i.e. the model predicts absence of nodular melanoma where there is nodular melanoma) at the expense of the Type I error (i.e. the model predicts nodular melanoma where there is no nodular melanoma).

With so many great dermatology apps out there, a user should be asking these two questions when choosing among them:

  1. What database of skin images was the model trained on?  Where did these images come from?  If an app user uses iPhone 10, but the images that were used for training are of much higher resolution then the machine learning model would be prone to errors.
  2. How was the data labeled?  I.e. how did the model in training know which skin image contained a melanoma, and which didn’t?

All these new developments in computer vision are welcoming news for patients in their fight against skin cancer.  It is even better news for dermatologists who now have confirmation, or a second opinion, on a particular medical decision, such as “Do I need to do a biopsy on this patient’s mole?”
