4-minute video on Curse of Dimensionality

In this 4-minute video, Daniel Satchkov, machine learning lead at WellAI, talks about Curse of Dimensionality in genome research.

The human genome contains 3 billion nucleotide pairs.  For a simple non-linear model, one needs at least 1 billion parameters to do a proper estimation.  If we combine the population of North America and Europe, that would still not be going to be enough independent observations to break even the number of the degrees of freedom.  In other words, it is close to impossible to do proper estimation of human genome.

Not to mention the computational power of this immense problem that even super computers would not be able to solve.  However, modern quantum computers would be able to.

Solving the genome problem is a hard one.  We are seemingly very far from achieving that.  However, science is making unbelievable strides.  We hope that with the help of new machine learning tools, like the ones we develop at WellAI, we will one day solve the genome problem, which would let use find cure for those diseases that are untreatable now.
